In this beautiful picture book a young girl saves a caterpillar and takes it to her grandfather. With his help she makes a butterfly house with everything a caterpillar needs. They watch the larva change from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. Although the girl is sad she has to let the butterfly go, she knows it is the right thing to do. Years later, when the girl has become a woman, the butterflies return to the garden every spring. Could it be that they are returning the love shown to their ancestor?
This story would make an excellent introduction to a classroom project on raising butterflies. There are two pages of information at the back of the book that detail the steps to successfully raising butterflies from the larval stage. Students could do daily journal entries about the changes they see in the larva. They could also measure and chart the growth of the caterpillars, which would meet math outcomes. The captivating full page illustrations also encourage an appreciation of the natural world in young readers.
