In this simulation, students deal with issues related to poverty in order to develop an understanding that it is not a result of individual choices but often a result of societal structures that make situations unfair to certain groups of citizens.
Each student is given a varying amount of money ranging from $1 to $11 with most receiving $5-$7. The students will have to make spending decisions in four different scenarios based on health, environment, education and disease factors that will result in varying outcomes. After participating in the scenarios debriefing takes place through a class discussion based on questions provided in the resource.
This simulation provides a good introduction to the topics of inequality and poverty. It is suitable for the middle school classroom and addresses many Social Studies outcomes related to social awareness and social justice. Some of the scenarios deal with sensitive topics such as disease and death. Therefore teachers should prepare their students accordingly.
