Birds and Worms

Elementary

Description

Students become birds on the hunt for food in this physical activity that gets kids moving while they learn about predator/prey relationships. As they fly around an outdoor area trying to locate “worms” of various colours, students develop an awareness of the role of camouflage in helping animals to survive. This foraging game strengthens pupil understanding of ecosystem dynamics while a class enjoys a fun outdoor learning adventure.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This resource supports science learning about animal adaptations and ecological connections. Math strategies like counting and graphing are also integrated into the learning. The lesson provides an excellent starting point for student projects that examine songbird behaviours and survival strategies in relationship to changing environments. Students could become active participants in conservation projects focused on habitat improvements within their community. A class could construct tree swallow boxes to place around a local wetland, create a food tree-planting project in the school yard or build and maintain a winter feeding station for resident birds.
