Bina’s Plant

Elementary, Middle

Description

Bina’s Plant is the second in a series of books based around the theme of teaching young people about environmental justice. This book continues the story of Maya and Bina’s commitment to their community when they are faced once again with a large company’s possible expansion in their neighborhood. Along with people from their community, Maya and Bin learn the correct way to protect their rights and ensure a healthy environment for all.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

Bina’s Plant is an engaging graphic novel perfectly suited for the upper elementary and middle school classrooms. Students at this age are eager to help make the world a better place and this story gives them an opportunity to see children like themselves making a difference in their community. After reading and discussing the book the students could be inspired to write their own graphic novel based on a community concern or a follow-up story with Mayah and Bina conquering another environmental justice issue.
