This short video summarizes the story of Africville, a Black community original built just north of the city of Halifax. Founded in the mid-18th century, many community members played important roles in the building and development of the city of Halifax. Yet in 1962, Halifax city council voted to demolish the community of Africville in order to develop the land for industry. This community's story is just one example of the oppression faced by Black Canadians.
The animated video “Africville: the Black community bulldozed by the city of Halifax” summarizes the fate of the community just outside of downtown Halifax. The video could be used as a case study for the middle school Social Studies classroom focusing on citizenship, social justice, and environmental racism.
