The Journey of Sustainabilty

Secondary

Description

Beginning with the question –Can business profit through sustainability?- the video traces the journey from the Industrial Revolution to the present to find the answer. Highlights of the journey include references to the pressures on business exerted by government regulations, investor concern with the reputation of their companies, employees with a strong sense of social responsibility and consumers who used their dollars to send a message.

The conclusion is that certain companies (the Marchers) are realizing that profit and sustainability are not a zero sum game.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The film provides a useful introduction to the concept of sustainable development and challenges the assumption that we must decide between the economy and the environment. This false dichotomy may be addressed in economics courses related to economic decision making; geography, environmental science, and world/global issues courses courses that deal with resource use and sustainable development.
