A project of LSF
In 2015 the United Nations launched an ambitious 15 year plan to eliminate global poverty, prejudice and injustice while also addressing the critical environmental issues threatening Earth's future. This video gathers together notable musicians, actors, advocates and youth to artfully describe each of the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The film teaches students that people around the world are speaking up for humankind, and if we all take action, then by 2030 we will have a fairer, healthier and more sustainable world.
This resource supports Grade 7-9 Science topics related to climate change, pollution impacts on air and water and the link between human and environmental health. The film highlights the interdependence of the global goals by describing environmental, economic and social perspectives, which benefits Social Studies learning regarding human rights, global citizenship and social justice.
The video encourages active youth involvement in achieving global sustainability which creates an opportunity to extend the learning experience with a classroom action project. Earth Hour is a worldwide event which occurs every March that promotes energy conservation by asking cities and towns to turn off all non-essential lights for 60 minutes. Students could organize an Earth Hour event in their local community that involves the municipality, businesses and residents. Information and resources can be found here.
