Visiting with the Land

Elementary

Description

Visiting with the Land is a series of twelve videos featuring guiding questions designed to enhance understanding of the Métis relationship with the Land. Narrated by Métis Knowledge Holder Krista Leddy, this series teaches students how to live in respectful connection with the land, which includes the waters, animals, plants, and all our relations. The videos are filmed outdoors, showcasing the natural environment and emphasizing the importance of the land in Métis culture.

These short videos offer a brief explanation of various plants and animals, inspiring us to be more mindful of our plant and animal relatives, while recognizing the Métis' connection to the land. Each video features topics that present both the English and Michif names for the plants and animals. Michif is the distinct, Indigenous language of the Métis.

Topics include:

  • Spider - wahkohtowin
  • Lichen and Working Together
  • Catails – pasihkânak
  • Robins and Sharing Stories – pihpihciwak
  • Choke Cherries – pikomina
  • Leaves Falling Moon – pinaskowipisim
  • Wild Rose – Story of Ourselves
  • Willow Bush – nipisî
  • Rising Water Levels – iskipêw
  • Fireweed – ihkapaskwa
  • Saskatoon Berries – misâskwatômina
  • High Bush Cranberries - wisakîmina

RCTL is committed to empowering educators to develop and apply foundational knowledge about Métis for the benefit of all students. All RCTL resources have been carefully crafted by RLI's team of Métis educators. RLI works closely with Métis leaders, knowledge keepers, and community members to produce resources that accurately present authentic Métis voices and stories in education
