A project of LSF
Urban Heat Islands is a hands-on activity that helps students to develop and demonstrate an understanding of the causes of urban warming and practical solutions to help ease its effects.
The students will begin by participating in a discussion about the difference in temperatures in cities and rural settings.
They will then observe a poster and identify the items that are causing heat and those that are helping to cool the environment. They will then participate in a discussion based around the choices that one can make to help to ease the heating of an area.
The students will then receive a poster on which they will add elements to help lower the temperature of their city. They can then present their poster or put it on display.
The students participate in a closing discussion to help synthesize their understanding.
Urban Heat Islands is a hands-on activity best suited for the early elementary Science classroom. It helps students to create an understanding of outcomes related to habitats and communities, thermal energy and climate change. The activity would be best used after the students are already familiar with the topics and used to demonstrate an understanding of how green spaces can help to reduce temperatures in cities.
