A project of LSF
What we wear has become disposable as consumer demand for cheap, trendy clothing has turned style into one of the world's leading environmental issues. This teacher facilitation tool supports student learning before, during and after a virtual panel discussion focused on sustainability and ethical fashion. Four inquiry-based activities use videos, digital tools, discussion prompts and creative problem-solving to explore key concepts as described below:
This flexible multimedia resource connects global sustainability to local action as students consider how fashion choices may keep increasing emissions, landfills growing and ecosystems struggling and how the true cost of their next new outfit could ultimately be paid by our planet.
This education tool supports Grade 5-8 Science, Technology and Social Studies learning related to climate change impacts, human and environmental interactions and waste management and resource cycles. Students also develop an understanding of how sustainable design, innovation and responsible consumption are connected. The teacher guide supports flexible use across subject areas and links classroom inquiry to real world environmental challenges and global citizenship learning.
The resource encourages students to move from learning to action through the Commit2Act online platform with which they can share and describe action initiatives. The suggested extension activity of organizing a mini fashion show featuring outfits created from second hand clothing and discarded materials could be expanded into a school-wide project. A class could partner with a local thrift store and college design students to host a "Trashion Fashion Day" that features students, teachers and staff wearing repurposed outfits. A slideshow documenting the event culd be shared on the Commit2Act platform and the school website to highlight the environmental benefits of reducing fast fashion consumption.
