The Ocean

Secondary, Middle

Description

The Ocean is part of the series, Nature is Speaking, in which the voices of a number of celebrities are used to "speak" for nature. The central message in The Ocean and in the other videos in the series is that human beings are part of nature; that nature is not dependent on human beings to exist; that human beings,on the other hand, are totally dependent on nature to exist.

The video effectively demonstrates the importance of the ocean and Harrison Ford as the voice of the ocean reminds us that Nature does not need people. People need Nature.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The Ocean has relevance for those subjects (Geography, Environmental Science, Social Studies) that examine our management of resources. After viewing the resource, students could be asked to investigate the Ocean's claim that it does not need people but people need the Ocean. What do we need it for and how are we doing looking after it?
