This informative and kid-friendly book for young learners takes the reader on an educational journey to learn about the importance of Indigenous plant relationships and how we are all connected to nature.
The author and her children help the reader learn all of the incredible gifts and uses of the plants around us as they go on a plant walk. They encounter various ecosystems, plants and animals on their journey. Embedded in the story are indigenous teachings and language.
The book includes informative sidebars, reflection questions and plant names in both Squamish and English. In addition, there are ideas for crafts and treats as well as mindfulness activities. The book concludes with a plant profile directory with illustrations, native plant history and important safety and harvesting information for parents.
The Land Knows Me is a beautiful resource book for an elementary classroom. It could be used as a field guide for outdoor education classes. Additionally, students could use the book as a model to create their own resource for plants from their area. The crafts and treats could be used as class-wide activities in literacy.
