Elementary

Description

The natural world contains an infinite variety of shapes and patterns of which students are often unaware. In this outdoor activity, students look for geometric shapes in nature to help them discover the diversity of the natural environment. Students go out on the playground to search for geometric shapes that appear on their sheet (provided). Once they have located an object that matches the shape they draw it. Students then share their findings with the rest of the class.

Recommendation of how and where to use it

An excellent outdoor, hands-on activity for students in kindergarten to grade two. Curriculum links to science and geometry. Extend the learning by having students discuss how these shapes help the plants or animals survive or which shape is the most common found in nature.
