A project of LSF
Learn about Migration is three-part video miniseries designed to help students understand the migration of North American waterfowl.
Part One: Learn the Flyways – introduces the four major migration routes in the sky Pacific, Central, Mississippi, and Atlantic, that birds travel across North America.
Part Two: Fuel for the Journey – explains how waterfowl, such as mallards, build and use energy to complete their long migrations
Part Three: Migration Hazards – explains the challenges birds face along the way, including disasters, habitat loss, and light pollution
The Migration Mini-Series aligns well with science and outcomes for grades four to eight. It helps students understand habitats, animal adaptations, and biodiversity by showing how waterfowl depend on certain environments. Teachers can use the videos to introduce why birds migrate and the challenges they face. After viewing, class discussions can focus on how waterfowl depend on specific habitats and the obstacles they face along their journey. Extension activities may include mapping the four flyways, acting out migration and energy use, or researching migration hazards. Learning can be extended with local birdwatching or participating in conservation projects.
