In this fall activity, children adopt a tree and observe it throughout September and October. The goal is to deepen students' awareness of individual trees and encourage a greater understanding and appreciation of their local environment.
The easy to implement outdoor learning activity is appropriate for grades two to five students with connections to science and visual arts. To further the learning in the older grades, students could be encouraged to detail their observations, drawings, recording method, use of graphs, etc. Research all the different types of trees in the schoolyard and make a list of all the trees and leaves that they can identify.
