Iqbal and his Ingenious Idea

How a science project helps one family and the planet

Elementary, Middle

Description

During the monsoon season, Iqbal's mother must cook over an open flame inside the family home in spite of the fact that it makes some of the family members sick.  When Iqbal hears of the district science fair and its theme of "sustainability", he comes up with a project idea to help his family and win the science fair. With the prize money, Iqbal can buy a pipe stove that will draw the smoke out of the home when cooking. Also included in the book is information on how to build a solar oven and background information on "clean cookstoves".

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

Iqbal and his Ingenious Idea would serve as a good introduction to the term of sustainability.  The students could research and plan their own sustainability project after studying the book as a class.

The book could also be used to learn about the daily lives of children in different countries around the world by starting with Bangladesh.

Another recommendation of how to use the book would be for the class or group of students to create their own solar cooker following the directions given in the book.
