This interesting outdoor activity has students use a Berlese funnel to direct small invertebrates living in the leaf litter into a collection container for observation. By building and using a Berlese funnel, students collect and observe various types of arthropods. These interesting creatures are sorted by species into Petri dishes. Students can then observe the insects with the magnifying glass and record and draw their observations.
Excellent outdoor activity for grades two to five students. In the younger grades, the activity is more teacher directed while the older students can build their own Berlese funnels in groups. To further the learning have students do an Internet search to determine the name of any insects they couldn’t identify. Have them discuss the role of the arthropods in their local ecosystem.
