A project of LSF
In this early elementary resource the focus is on developing an awareness and understanding of the importance of migration for certain groups of animals and the challenges faced while migrating.
The activity begins outdoors with a read aloud of the book "Going Home: The Mystery of Animal Migration" by Marianne Berkes. Afterwards the students play a game similar to Simon Says in which they imitate the animals from the book.
The students will then gather for a wrap up discussion and make predictions about what they will learn from their observations of hummingbirds throughout the year.
Hummingbird Migration is an activity-based resource best suited for the early elementary classroom. Students will need prior knowledge of the needs of animals (food, water and shelter) from previous lessons in addition to an understanding of seasonal changes. The resource helps to attain curriculum outcomes related to seasonal changes, needs of animals and habitats.
