A project of LSF
When a sports team goes into a halftime huddle they are reviewing how they have played while planning strategies to win the game. This slide show and brainstorming activity has students go into a "halftime huddle" to scrutinize progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and imagine a world that has achieved victory in creating a healthy, equitable and peaceful planet by 2030. As students identify their vision for the future, they also describe how they can take personal action and inspire others to join the sustainability team.
This resource supports Grade 3-8 Social Studies curriculum related to global issues, Canada's role in the United Nations, links between environmental, social and economic concerns and sustainable development. Science content related to climate change impacts on natural systems is reinforced as students explore SDG's 13 (climate change), 14 (life below water) and 15 (life on land).
This activity is designed to be used in conjunction with the "Fact-ivism" website located here. The site uses authentic data to engage students in raising public awareness about the UN SDG's. A class could use this learning experience and the Fact-ivism site to develop a daily blog for the school social media site that identifies how students can become environmental citizens by practicing sustainable habits such as walking to school.
