Âmî Osâwâpikones (Dear Dandelion)

Elementary

Description

Âmî Osâwâpikones (Dear Dandelion) is a beautifully illustrated picture book that uses the life cycle of the dandelion to teach students about self-love, resilience, belonging, and the value of every living thing. Through poetic, lyrical text and the perspective of an Indigenous child, the story follows the dandelion across the four seasons, showing how it grows, rests, spreads its seeds, and blooms again despite challenges. The dandelion becomes a powerful symbol of perseverance, healing, kindness, and hope, encouraging students to recognize that they are more than how others perceive them.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This book is well suited for students in K-4 and supports cross-curricular learning by integrating language arts, science, Indigenous education, and social-emotional learning. It supports inquiry into how plants change throughout the seasons while encouraging students to reflect on themes of identity, resilience, kindness, and the importance of every living thing. The inclusion of Plains Cree vocabulary and Indigenous perspectives also makes it a valuable resource for Truth and Reconciliation learning and for fostering respect for Indigenous languages and knowledge systems. Teachers can use this story to foster discussions about identity, emotional well-being, respect for nature, seasonal changes, plant life cycles, and the interconnectedness of all living things while supporting social-emotional learning and environmental education. As an outdoor activity, students can be inspired by the book to create a tribute to a tree or plant species that grows in their region.
