Adaptation

Elementary, Middle

Description

This rap video will get students on their feet while teaching them how adaptations help animals survive in a particular habitat.  Featuring the camel with all of its neat structural features, the catchy tune will soon have a class singing along as the chorus reminds them that adaptations are "changes in the body to fit a location"!

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This video complements elementary science units in grades 2 through 6 that address outcomes related to animals and their habitats.  The film could form the basis of adaptation experiments such as having students picking up different seed types with bird beak replicas.  Students could also research a Canadian species and conduct a compare and contrast exercise with the camel.  The video could serve as an engaging precursor to a field trip during which a class observes animals in nature to learn more about the relationships between species and their environment.
