Who Can Live Here?

Secondary

Description

Students assess the fitness of a habitat for a specific purpose. The lesson is designed to introduce students to concepts of ecology, habitat care, and species identification. Students will be able to:

  • Locate habitat elements on a specific site
  • Assess site’s potential as a suitable habitat for a specific species
  •  Identify an area of the site that would include the most habitat elements for a specific species

General Assessment

What skills does this resource explicitly teach?

Students learn those skills associated with observing, analyzing, and reporting on the elements of a habitat.

Strengths

Well constructed framework for gathering and analyzing data on habitats, what is there, what do different species require in a habitat and what one might do to make a given habitat more attractive for various species. Relatively easy in terms of tools and site requirements for students to carry out assigned tasks.

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The resource would serve as an introductory lesson for those units of study that examine ecosystems or the sustainability of ecosystems or natural diversity and habitat.
