The Soil

Secondary, Middle

Description

The Soil is part of the series, Nature is Speaking, in which the voices of a number of celebrities are used to "speak" for nature. The central message in The Soil and in the other videos in the series is that human beings are part of nature; that nature is not dependent on human beings to exist; that human beings,on the other hand, are totally dependent on nature to exist.

Edward Norton is the voice of the soil and he is tired of being treated like dirt and demands more respect.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The Soil has relevance for those subjects (Geography, Environmental Science, Social Studies) that examine land use and management of resources. After viewing the resource, students could be asked to investigate the "charges" made by the voice of the soil and the possible consequences if that voice is not heeded.
