In this learning activity, students will conduct a model population census by taking advantage of “species” present in their own local environment. Students will analyze and compare results to develop an understanding of the complexities associated with species and ecosystem management. They will explore different variables and factors contributing to population dynamics.
Students have an opportunity to collect and analyze data and to discuss the difficulties associated with data collection.
The resource limits its goal to introducing a process-collecting "population" data on selected " species". Once the process is in place students can undertake an authentic study where content becomes important.
The resource is intended to support select units in grade 12 Biology but may be used in those units of study that focus on ecosystems, biodiversity and sustainability of ecosystems. It might also be used in math units exploring statistics.
