In this animated video, Oliver participates in the Challenge of the Sphinx where he must reduce a week’s worth of garbage in a minute. Using his prior knowledge, Oliver separates the glass, cans, paper, and plastic for recycling; food scraps for composting; and clothes and toys for donating. He is then surprised to learn that the garbage was his own and comes to realize the importance of "reducing, reusing and recycling.
This age appropriate video can be used to introduce students to source reduction at an early age. It is an excellent program to generate discussions about avoiding products with excessive packaging, buying used items, reusing bags and containers and donating used clothes, toys and games. Appropriate for kindergarten to grade four students, it can be easily integrated into the science and social studies curriculum or as part of an Earth Day activity.
