Exploring Water

Why isn’t there enough water for everyone?

Secondary, Middle

Description

Exploring water allows the students to explore the concept of water by thinking, feeling and connecting to water through reflection questions and hands-on activities.

The students will track their daily water use with a ready-made chart in the first activity. Afterwards, they will do a hands-on activity where they will try carrying a bucket of water to gain an understanding of how some people in the world have to collect water each day and walk many miles to carry it back home. In the final activity, the students learn how to collect rainwater at home to water plants.

In addition to the tools to support the inquiry, the resource includes a student guide, ideas for action and suggestions and support for deepening the investigation.

General Assessment

Strengths

  • This is a very well-designed student inquiry.
  • It offers a wide range of current materials to engage and support students in their investigations.
  • The resource supports critical & systems thinking.
  • The tools provided promote personal reflection, values education and empathy.

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This resource invites students to reflect on their water use and how they can to conserve water in their daily lives.  It would be an excellent resource to implement around World Water Day in March with its emphasis on water conversation and how climate change affects our water sources.
