Ecological Footprints

How We Can Tread a Little Lighter on the Planet

This resource examines the difference between consumption and waste. Students investigate the concept of an ecological footprint using a game format.  Afterwards they visit an interactive website that allows them to calculate their family's ecological footprint and consider different suggestions on how to reduce it.  As a culminating activity, the students complete a reflection sheet and set goals to reduce their consumption and waste.

A footprint calculator is also available from Zero footprint Youth.

General Assessment

What skills does this resource explicitly teach?

This resource does not explicitly teach skills as much as concepts.

  • Active internet links provided
  • Engaging activities with good visuals
  • Ecological footprint calculator is Canadian and interactive
  • Worksheet (Annex 1) provides an opportunity for reflection and goal setting with family members

  • The link provided for "The Story of Stuff" is quite bleak and negative.  It gives a lot of US based information.  It should be previewed before showing it to students.
