Climate Change Adaptation: it's time for decisions

Secondary

Description

The video assumes that we know enough about the causes and possible consequences of climate change and its time to act. Action is equated with adaptation - what can we do to reduce the impact of climate change? The video includes several steps that might be taken such as developing a land use plan designed to adapt to the increased possibility of drought or flooding but is intended to begin a discussion among teachers and students rather than provide answers.

General Assessment

Strengths

The number of catastrophic weather related events of the last several years suggests that the effects of climate change are here and there is urgency in considering how we are to adapt. The video serves to make students aware of this urgency and prepares them for the debate and discussion that we must anticipate.

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The video limits itself to making the case that given the reality of climate change, we need to give our attention and our energies to considerations as to how are we going to adapt to this reality. The video is therefore introductory and should be followed by lessons in which students consider and weight the adaptive options available to society.
