American Robin

Description

This resource provides students and teachers with simple plans for constructing a 'nesting shelf'.  The Early March Nature Guide draws attention to the first of our 'returning birds'. Among those mentioned is the American Robin.  A great way for students to observe these iconic birds in action is to build nesting shelves that they can then install in strategic locations in the school yard. Given that Robins will nest several times during the spring & summer, early March is a great time to get started this project to ensure lots of interesting and entertaining viewing.

This easy to implement project supports a number of curriculum areas that deal with the concepts of habitat, ecoystems, biodiversity, animal development and stewardship.

Once constructed the nesting structures provide authentic opportunities for students to collect, chronicle and present data throughout the remainder of the school year.
