BT Corn

Secondary

Description

Scientists are now able to insert the gene Bacillius thuringiensis or Bt into farmer's crops in order to prevent hostile takeovers by pests But what happens when the pest become resistant and prevail to such an extent that Bt in the form of spray, used by organc farmers becomes useless too?

The video Bt Corn allows students to consider the larger topic of genetic manipulation and the law of unintended circumstances.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

Bt Corn is a case study in genetic engineering in food production. It may be used to satisfy the prescribed outcomes in a variety of subjects and grade levels.

  • Geography - managing natural resources, agriculture, human-environmental interactions
  • Biology - genetics, biodiversity
  • Environmental Science - human impact on the environment, natural resource management
