Mister Rogers Visits the Recycling Centre

Elementary

Description

America's favourite neighbour takes young children on a fascinating tour of the recycling centre in this nostalgic video.  As students watch cans being crushed and glass shattering they will be enthralled by the process while learning about the environmental importance of the three R's.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This film supports K-2 science outcomes related to characteristics of materials, sustainability and waste disposal.   The video also provides an excellent introduction to Earth Day activities such as an outdoor litter clean up or a "litter less" lunch.

The science learning could also be expanded with an environmental action project in which students construct solar ovens out of recycled materials and prepare a healthy local lunch like vegetarian pizza.  Citizenship outcomes could also be supported through a school wide awareness campaign whereby a class creates and performs an original rap or song about the three R's.
